http://www.indiana.edu/~ccumc/copyright/guidesum.html

"The table below constitutes a summary reference to the recommended portions of copyrighted materials from different media,

for incorporation into multimedia projects by educators and students. However, the table  should be used only in conjunction

with full text of the Fair Use Guidelines, which defines the purposes to which they apply, and further conditions of use within

these purposes. The use of portions larger than described here may also be permissible, but user must test a particular application

against all four factors of  "Fair Use Doctrine"  contained in  (Title 17, U.S. Code, Sec. 107) to determine if it qualifies as fair."

Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia

http://www.libraries.psu.edu/mtss/fairuse/dalziel.html

"The lack of fair use guidelines for educational multimedia places a huge burden on educators who want to take advantage

of today's new teaching technologies. According to the  Copyright Act of 1976,  an educator must obtain copyright permission

to duplicate or change an image in any way. Consequently, digitizing an image to incorporate it into a multimedia project requires

faculty to obtain permission for each copyrighted piece they use in their program. When one multimedia production can easily

contain over 2,000 copyrighted works, paying royalty fees and obtaining formal permission to use each piece can be costly

and time consuming. Often it is impossible to track down who owns the rights to a certain photograph or other piece of work."

"The Media Literacy Activities ask students to critically examine and analyze the multimedia projects of others,  especially those

they find in the real world around them. Frequently the media literacy activities complement production activities where students

work on their own multimedia projects, as in the pair Audience Influence ( literacy )  and Defining Your Audience ( production ).

The Media Literacy Activities are intended to help students develop high-quality multimedia projects and use them responsibly. "

Is there any evidence that multimedia is more effective for delivering instruction than traditional methods?

Is there more than anecdotal evidence to show that the educational results justify

the cost and effort  of incorporating multimedia technology into the classroom?

To help answer these questions, we have a growing body of research devoted to assessing

the effectiveness of multimedia in all levels of education,  including corporate and military training.
