* Graphing Calculator activities with Polynomial Functions *  Exercise 2 *

The graphs of a  Polynomial Function   is unique set of graphs from lines to multiple curved figures.

There are two basic subsets of Polynomial Functions:  Postivie and Negative

The Positive subset have Odd graphs that lean to the right and Even grahs that go Up.

The Negative subset have Odd graphs that lean to the left and Even grahs that go Down.

Graphing Calculators are extremenly useful with the investigation of polynomial functions.

The activities below will start with 3rd Degree Polynomial Functions since we have already view 1st & 2nd.

A review of Polynomial Functions might be helpful.    Let's try a few exercises with polynomial functions.

Remember all you have to do is type in the GC Mode of the equation and press enter.

Remember to use  *  for multiply    and    /  for divide    and     for exponents.

Maybe,  print out this page before starting this Graphing Calculator activities.

1. Using the review on Polynomial Functions, predict the shape of this one.

Math Mode:    Y = + X3 – 3X2 + 9X + 13

GC Mode:    + X^3 – 3*X^2 + 9*X + 13

Note the difference between the one above and the one below.  Why difference?

Math Mode:    Y = – X3 + 3X2 – 9X – 13

GC Mode:    – X^3 + 3*X^2 – 9*X – 13

 2. Using the review on Polynomial Functions, predict the shape of this one.

Math Mode:   Y = + X3 + 4X2 – 2X – 20

GC Mode:     + X^3 + 4*X^2 – 2*X – 20

Note the difference between the one above and the one below.  Why difference?

Math Mode:   Y = – X3 – 4X2 + 2X + 20

GC Mode:     – X^3 – 4*X^2 + 2*X + 20

3. Using review on Polynomial Functions, predict shape.  Where is Constant Term?

Math Mode:  Y = + 2X4  – 11X3  +  20X2  + 13X

GC Mode:  + 2*X^4  – 11*X^3  +  20*X^2  + 13X

Note the difference between above and below.   Does it look like 4th Degree?

Math Mode:  Y = – 2X4 + 11X3  – 20X2  – 13X

GC Mode:  – 2*X^4  + 11*X^3 – 20*X^2  – 13X

4. Using review on Polynomial Functions, predict shape.  Where is Linear Term?

Math Mode:    Y = – 2X4 + 15X3 – 24X2  + 8

GC Mode:    – 2*X^4  + 15*X^3 – 24*X^2 + 8

Note the difference between above and below.   Does it appear to be 4th Degree?

Math Mode:    Y = + 2X4 – 15X3 + 24X2  – 8

GC Mode:    + 2*X^4  – 15*X^3 + 24*X^2  – 8

Click on one of the Online Calculators:  I like the first one but they are all great!

GCalc!  The equation box is at the top of the screen.

Oh yel, you have to press the Click to Start GCalc button.

Click the Reset Button (Top Right) and Yes to clear screen.

CoolMath Graphing Calculator   The equation box is at the top of the screen.

Click the Cls button at the bottom right of commands to clear screen.

GraphIt!   The equation box is at the bottom of the screen.

Oh yel, you have to press the  Plot It!  at bottom left of screen.

Also, click the check mark in front of grid before starting to show grid.

Also, typing in a new Linear Function automatically clears the screen.
